Each rental has a maximum charge, so a vehicle you forgot to end cannot run up an unbounded bill overnight.
Reserve while you walk
Hold a vehicle before you get there. The hold expires on its own, so nothing sits reserved and unusable for someone else.

Charge level is on the map, and anything too low to be useful is taken out of the pool rather than left for you to discover.
